Earl strengthened to a hurricane today, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph) as the storm moves west at 18 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.
The Miami-based center upgraded the storm’s status following data it received from an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft.
Earl is about 365 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, the center said. The storm is a Category 1 on the five- step Saffir-Simpson scale, the center said.
