Matt Kuchar Wins PGA Tour's First Playoff Event With Victory Over Laird
Matt Kuchar birdied the first hole of a playoff to beat Scotland’s Martin Laird at the U.S. PGA Tour’s Barclays tournament, the first of four season-ending playoff events.
Kuchar, 32, shot a 5-under-par 66 during the final round at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey, and made the playoff when Laird had a three-putt bogey on the final hole. Kuchar and Laird finished 12-under through four rounds.
Kuchar, who had ten top-10 finishes in 21 PGA Tour events this season, receives $1.35 million and moves atop the FedEx Cup standings. The FedEx Cup winner, which will be determined at next month’s Tour Championship in Atlanta, receives a $10 million bonus.
Tiger Woods tied for 12th place at 7-under to move into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for next week’s playoff event, the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. The top 100 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings advance.
