Bermuda Warns of Battering Waves as Hurricane Danielle Nears

Bermuda warned of large swells and battering waves as Hurricane Danielle, the second of the Atlantic season, draws closer to the island group.

Danielle strengthened today and may become a major hurricane with winds of at least 111 miles an hour (178 kilometers an hour) tomorrow, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on its website at 5 a.m. Miami time. The system had 105-mph winds and was 860 miles southeast of Bermuda moving northwest at 16 mph.

The center is forecasting Danielle to pass east of Bermuda on Aug. 29 though a westward shift would raise the risk of a direct hit. The Bermuda Weather Service today issued a small craft warning that begins tomorrow evening, indicating winds of up to 38 mph and 9-foot (2.7-meter) waves are expected.

“Some large swells will move in from the southeast, causing dangerous and battering surf on South Shore beaches in particular,” the service said. Danielle is expected to be about 185 miles southeast of the islands at noon on Aug. 29, it said, warning of possible gales.

Danielle, the second hurricane of the June 1-Nov. 30 Atlantic season, is a category two storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale. If its sustained winds gain any more speed, the system will surpass Hurricane Alex as the season’s strongest. Alex had 105-mph winds when it hit northeastern Mexico on June. 30.

Following behind Danielle is Tropical Storm Earl, which today gained strength over the Atlantic Ocean. That system had 45-mph winds and was about 695 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands before dawn Miami time. Earl is heading west- northwest at 16 mph and forecast to become a hurricane within two days, the center said.
