Foreign Drugmaker Buyouts Raise Concern in India, Financial Express Says
India’s commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma wrote to his health ministry counterpart this week to draw attention to the acquisitions of Indian pharmaceutical companies by foreign multinational companies, the Financial Express newspaper reported.
Six Indian drugmaker-takeovers in four years, including those by Daiichi Sankyo Co. and Abbott Laboratories, have raised public concern on their impact on the availability of low-cost medicines, the newspaper reported Sharma as telling Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The risk is that the multinational buyers will push their patented drugs into India, making them unaffordable for a bulk of the population, the report cited an unidentified government official as saying.
