Chechen Leader Kadyrov Makes Peace With His Biggest Rival, Kommersant Says
Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed leader of Chechnya, reconciled with his biggest internal rival, Isa Yamadayev, Kommersant said.
Yamadayev publicly confirmed the death of his brother Sulim as part of a deal to make peace with Kadyrov, the Moscow-based newspaper reported today, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. As long as the possibility existed that Sulim Yamadayev was still alive, Kadyrov faced a rival powerbase, Kommersant said.
Even after Dubai authorities said Sulim Yamadayev was killed in a shooting last year, Isa insisted his brother wasn’t dead. Sulim was disconnected from a life-support system yesterday and will be buried in the family hometown of Gudermes, Yamadayev was cited as telling Kommersant.
Yamadayev held Kadyrov responsible for the attack on Sulim and the murder of another brother, Ruslan, who was shot and killed in his car in Moscow in 2008. Kadyrov, who once said he was prepared to die 100 deaths for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, denied any involvement.
