Yankee Alex Rodriguez Aggravates Calf Strain, Placed on Disabled List

Alex Rodriguez was placed on the disabled list yesterday by the New York Yankees, a day after he aggravated a calf strain during the game against the Seattle Mariners.

The third baseman, who originally injured his left calf Aug. 23 against the Detroit Tigers, lasted one at-bat when he returned as a designated hitter four days later.

“We’re going to play it safe,” manager Joe Girardi said, according to MLB.com. “We don’t feel he’s any worse than he was before, but we’re just going to play it extremely safe here and know that we’ll have a player in 15 days.”

Ramiro Pena and Eduardo Nunez will be used in Rodriguez’s absence. Pena is batting .197 with 16 runs batted in on 23 hits. Nunez, in his Major League Baseball debut yesterday, drove in the go-ahead run with his first career hit in the seventh inning to help the Yankees beat the Mariners 9-5 at Yankee Stadium.
