Juan Martin del Potro won’t defend his U.S. Open tennis title because he isn’t ready to compete after having wrist surgery, the Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the Argentine’s plans.
Del Potro, who had the surgery in May, is expected to announce his decision later today, AP said. It would come a day after top-ranked Serena Williams pulled out of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament following foot surgery.
Del Potro won his first major title by beating Roger Federer in last year’s U.S. Open final. This year’s tournament begins Aug. 30 at the National Tennis Center in New York.
