Braves Acquire Derrek Lee From the Cubs for Three Minor-League Pitchers
The National League East-leading Braves took 34-year-old Lee and cash from the Cubs in exchange for Minor League pitchers Robinson Lopez, Tyrelle Harris and Jeffrey Lorick, Atlanta said on its website.
Atlanta first basemen are batting .236 with 19 home runs and 59 runs scored this season. Of the eight teams currently holding playoff positions, the Braves’ first basemen rank seventh in homers and runs, and sixth in batting average.
Lee’s .251 average and 16 homers this season are below his typical numbers. Last season, he batted .306 with 35 homers. He is a career .286 hitter.
Lee has missed the Cubs’ last two games with a bulging disk in his back. He received an epidural injection and is expected to be ready to play tomorrow, ESPN reported.
Troy Glaus, Atlanta’s current first-base starter, may be moved back to third base to replace Jones, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament on Aug. 10.
The Cubs are 50-70, 18.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central.
