Liverpool Agrees to Sign Middlesbrough Goalkeeper Jones for $3.6 Million

Liverpool said it agreed to sign Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones for 2.3 million pounds ($3.6 million).

The Australian international, who left the Socceroos’ squad a week before the World Cup started after his son was diagnosed with leukemia, passed a medical exam yesterday and agreed to terms on a three-year contract, Liverpool said on its website.

Jones, 28, will provide backup to first-choice goalkeeper Jose Reina and qualifies as a so-called homegrown player after joining Middlesbrough as a trainee. Under new Premier League rules this season, clubs are required to name at least eight homegrown players in their squads.
