Toews Says Members of Tamil Eelam Group May Be on Cargo Ship in Victoria

Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said today there may be members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam -- a rebel group designated by Canada as a terrorist organization -- among the 490 people on a Thailand- flagged cargo ship that arrived in Canada today.

Speaking to reporters in Esquimalt, British Columbia, Toews said the government is considering changes to Canadian laws to discourage people from “taking advantage” of the country’s refugee and immigration policies.

Police, military and immigration officials are with the Tamils who arrived earlier today, Toews said.
