Safaricom of Kenya Money-Transfer Users Rise to 61% in July From Year Ago

Safaricom Ltd., East Africa’s biggest mobile-network operator, said the number of people using its mobile money-transfer service known as M-Pesa rose 61 percent in July from a year earlier.

M-Pesa users climbed to 11.9 million from 7.4 million a year ago, the Nairobi-based company said in an e-mailed statement today. The value of transactions processed in July was 33.3 billion shillings, it said.

There are 176,052 active users of M-Kesho, the mobile phone-based bank-account service that enables Equity Bank Ltd. to use Safaricom’s M-Pesa agents as mobile-banking agents.
