Former Italy President Cossiga's Condition Improves; Still on Life Support
Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga’s condition has improved even as he remains on life support in a Rome hospital, his doctors said.
The 82-year-old former Christian Democrat leader, a senator-for-life, “resumed breathing spontaneously, although with assistance,” the Gemelli hospital’s press office said today in an e-mailed update on his condition. Doctors decided to gradually suspend the use of sedatives, the statement said.
Cossiga, a staunch backer of the U.S. during the Cold War, was hospitalized on Aug. 9 after suffering from cardio- respiratory illness.
