Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia: Asian Bonds, Currency Preview

The following events and economic reports may influence trading in Asia’s local bonds and currencies today. Bond yields and exchange rates are from the previous trading session unless stated otherwise.

Japan: The Bank of Japan is scheduled to wrap up its two- day policy meeting and Governor Masaaki Shirakawa will hold a press conference. The central bank is forecast to keep its key benchmark rate at 0.1 percent, according to all 16 economists in a Bloomberg News survey.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku will hold a media briefing at 4 p.m.

The yield on the 1.1 percent government bond due in June 2020 was 1.015 percent, according to Japan Bond Trading Co., the nation’s largest interdealer debt broker.

The yen traded at 85.92 per dollar at 7:35 a.m. in Tokyo.

China: Exports rose 35 percent from a year earlier in July after gaining 43.9 percent in June, according to the median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey ahead of data due today.

India: The government will offer 80 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) of treasury bills tomorrow. It will sell 70 billion rupees of notes due in 91 days and 10 billion rupees of 364-day paper.

The rupee was at 46.1325.

Indonesia: The government plans to sell 3 trillion rupiah ($335 million) of bonds and bills at an auction today, the finance ministry’s debt-management office said. It will sell five-, 10- and 20-year maturity bonds and one-year treasury notes.

The yield on the 11 percent bond due in November 2020 was 7.87 percent. The rupiah was at 8,932 per dollar.

Malaysia: Industrial production increased 11.5 percent in June, compared with revised growth of 12.6 percent in May, according to the median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey before a government report today.

The yield on the 3.835 percent bond due in August 2015 was 3.32 percent. The ringgit was at 3.1430.

Philippines: Exports rose 25 percent in June from a year earlier, compared with an increase of 37.3 percent in May, according to the median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey ahead of a report by the National Statistics Office today.

The yield on the 7.75 percent debt due in February 2020 was 7.39 percent. The peso was at 44.910 per dollar.

Thailand: The Bank of Thailand will sell 49 billion baht ($1.5 billion) of treasury bills today. It will sell 22 billion baht of notes maturing in 24 days, 15 billion baht of paper maturing in 87 days and 12 billion baht of bills due in 178 days.

The yield on the 5.25 percent debt maturing in July 2013 was 2.75 percent. The baht was at 31.96.
