Sauna World Championships Claim Life of Russian Contestant in Finland
A Russian contestant died yesterday of heat in the Sauna World Championships in Heinola, Finland, a statement on the event’s website said.
A Finnish competitor was taken to hospital and the event was discontinued immediately, Ossi Arvela, head of the competition said in the statement. The contestants had been ruled fit to compete by a doctor and first aid personnel were present, Arvela said. The police are probing the death, he added.
The organizers are saddened by the event, Arvela said in the statement. The Sauna World Championships measure how long people can stay in a hot room called the sauna, where temperatures can exceed 110 degrees Celsius (230 degrees Fahrenheit).
