Telecom Italia, Unions Reach Agreement on 3,900 Job Cuts, Union Head Says
Telecom Italia SpA, Italy’s biggest phone company, and labor unions reached an agreement on cutting 3,900 workers, said Alessandro Genovesi, national secretary of the communications section of the country’s largest union, CGIL.
The job cuts will be carried out on a voluntary basis through December 2012, Genovesi said in a telephone interview today. About 2,200 other employees will be given so-called “solidarity contracts,” which entail reduced hours and lower pay, he said. “Overall, it’s a positive result for Telecom Italia’s workers,” Genovesi said.
Italian Labor Minister Maurizio Sacconi will sign the agreement in Rome today with union and company officials at 12 p.m., the ministry said in an e-mailed statement.
A Telecom Italia spokeswoman confirmed the company reached an agreement with unions without giving further details.
