Ford Mulls Assembling Cars in Egypt, Al Mal Reports (Update1)

Ford Motor Co. and Fikry Group, the U.S. automaker’s agent in Egypt, are considering a plan to assemble cars in the North African country, Al Mal newspaper reported today, citing a Ford executive.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based manufacturer has opened a service center in Egypt at a cost of $5 million, according to the Cairo-based newspaper.

Ford has no plans at present to produce vehicles in Egypt, John Gardiner, a Ford spokesman based in Cologne, Germany, said in a statement by e-mail today.
