The oil originated from an above-ground storage facility owned by Energy XXI Bermuda Ltd. (EXXI), the Coast Guard said in the statement. About 500 gallons spilled into the waterway.
“There was an overflow at that storage facility and the facility was shut down and the spill contained,” Stewart Lawrence, a spokesman for the company, said in a telephone interview. “The amount of oil actually spilled is 25 barrels.” The spill is being remediated.
Most of what spilled was water, Lawrence said. “It was an equipment malfunction that sent water into the oil tank and overflowed the tank and so it was water and oil spilling out of there.”
Point Au Fer is 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Morgan City, Louisiana.
