Tanzanian authorities arrested 17 people on bribery charges after they allegedly doled out money, garments and honey to win votes in October elections, the Daily News reported, citing a Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau official.
One of the apprehended, a female district commissioner, was running to become lawmaker for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in the northern Kilimanjaro constituency, the state-run, Dar es Salaam-based newspaper said today, citing regional PCCB commander Alexander Budigila.
Presidential and legislative elections are scheduled in the east African nation for Oct. 31, the newspaper said.
