BHP, Blue Financial, Remgro, Telkom, Tiger: South African Equity Preview

The following is a list of companies whose shares may have unusual price changes in South Africa. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index slid 37.33, or 0.1 percent, to 27,761.70. The measure rose 3.4 percent last week, a second weekly increase.

BHP Billiton Ltd. (BIL SJ): The world’s largest mining company may bid for Alinta Energy Ltd.’s Port Hedland and Newman power stations, the Australian Financial Review said. BHP rose 1.65 rand, or 0.8 percent, to 216.85 rand.

Blue Financial Services Ltd. (BFS SJ): The provider of unsecured loans posted a loss of 1.02 billion rand ($137 million) in the year through Feb. 28 and said its auditors Deloitte & Touche issued a disclaimer which cast “significant doubt” over the company’s ability to continue as a going concern. The shares fell 1 cent, or 6.3 percent, to 15 cents.

Remgro Ltd. (REM SJ): The investment company controlled by the billionaire Rupert family reports fiscal full-year results. Remgro on June 9 said earnings excluding one-time items for the year through March would be between 28 percent and 32 percent lower compared with a year earlier. The stock climbed 1.3 percent to 98.81 rand.

Telkom South Africa Ltd. (TKG SJ): Africa’s largest fixed- line operator said net income surged more than eight-fold to 37.5 billion rand. Telkom dropped 0.8 percent to 36.90 rand.

Tiger Brands Ltd. (TBS SJ): Shareholders of South Africa’s largest food company meet to vote on a cash distribution that will be paid in lieu of a dividend. Tiger Brands increased 0.7 percent to 177.50 rand.

(MPC SJ); Rex Trueform Clothing Co. (RTOP SJ); Stefanutti Stocks Holdings Ltd. (SSK SJ); Value Group Ltd. (VLE SJ); Wooltru Ltd. (WLOP SJ).

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) fell 1.4 percent to $19.50. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) dropped less than 0.1 percent to $44.79. BHP Billiton Plc (BBL US) gained 1 percent to $57.45. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) rose 6.2 percent to $4.79. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) retreated 0.8 percent to $14.04. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) increased 1.7 percent to $10.32. Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (IMPUY US) declined 3.4 percent to $25.30. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) climbed 1.3 percent to $4.05. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) slipped 0.7 percent to $37.96.
