Canada's Liberals, New Democrats Discussing Possible Merger, CBC Says

Canada’s opposition Liberal Party and New Democratic Party are discussing a possible merger that would yield a new party, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported on its website, citing “insiders.”

Warren Kinsella, who was an adviser to former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, told the broadcaster there have been discussions by “serious people.” The new party could be named the Liberal Democrats, the CBC said.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has called the idea absurd, the CBC reported.

A poll last week found a coalition of the two parties could beat Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, the CBC said.
