Tiananmen Square Student Leader Wuer Kaixi Arrested in Tokyo, Kyodo Says

A Chinese man who led pro-democracy student demonstrations in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989 was arrested in Tokyo, Kyodo News reported, citing police.

Wuer Kaixi was arrested today on suspicion of trespassing on Chinese embassy grounds, according to the report.

Calls to the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo seeking comment after normal business hours weren’t answered.

“We are not aware of the arrest at the moment,” said a spokeswoman at the Metropolitan Police Department in Tokyo, who asked not to be identified.

Today is the anniversary of the Chinese government’s 1989 crackdown on the student protesters.
