United Targets Arteta

Manchester United may try to sign Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta, whose contract talks with the Merseyside team haven’t made progress, the Daily Mirror reported.

Arteta has two years left on his current deal, the paper added, and he’s aware of interest from clubs including United, Arsenal and Manchester City. United may be prepared to pay 10 million pounds ($14.5 million), according to the Mirror.

Capello to Stay

England is confident coach Fabio Capello will commit his future to the nation before the squad flies to the World Cup in South Africa tomorrow, the Sun reported.

The Independent said he’ll sign a new contract with the Football Association before the group leaves. He’d told the governing body his future must be resolved before departure, the newspaper said.

Capello has reached a verbal agreement with the F.A. to remain in charge until the end of the 2012 European Championship, Sky News reported today.

Inter Wants Benitez

Inter Milan wants to sign Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez to replace Jose Mourinho, who joined Real Madrid, the Sun reported.

The Serie A champion made its move at the weekend, when speculation surrounded England’s Capello being Inter’s target, the paper added.

Inter is concerned that Benitez will turn down a deal to double his 4.5 million-pounds-a-year pay as he has an “almost impossible act” to follow, the Sun said. Mourinho completed a treble of Champions League with domestic league and cup.

Cole for Stoke?

Stoke is ready to break its transfer record with a 12 million-pound bid for West Ham striker Carlton Cole, the Mirror reported.

Stoke coach Tony Pulis will offer Dave Kitson as part of the deal, according to the newspaper. Cole, 26, has been a “long-term target” for Pulis, it said.

Chase for Cole

Tottenham and Arsenal are leading the chase to sign Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, while Manchester United’s interest has cooled, the Daily Mail reported.

The Blues have made no effort to resume contract talks with Cole, whose contract is about to run out, the Mail added.

Blackpool Wants Welbeck

Blackpool, promoted to the Premier League via the playoffs, wants to beat Preston to the loan signing of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, the Mail reported.

The 19-year-old is scheduled to go back to Preston on loan but the prospect of playing in the top division may give Blackpool an advantage in signing him, the paper added.
