Red Sox Place Pitcher Josh Beckett on Disabled List With Lower Back Strain

The Boston Red Sox placed pitcher Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Reliever Joe Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and will work from the bullpen, while Tim Wakefield will start for Beckett on May 23, Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters today.

Beckett left last night’s game at the New York Yankees after 4 2/3 innings because of tightness in his back after allowing five runs on five hits. Boston rallied with six runs over the final two innings to win 7-6. Beckett has a 1-1 record and a 7.29 earned run average this season.
