Tesco, Marks & Spencer Triumph in International Wine Challenge

Tesco Plc and Marks & Spencer Group Plc were today named as the joint leaders among U.K. supermarkets in the International Wine Challenge 2010, an annual competition that attracted entries from 46 countries.

Each picked up 62 awards for their own-label wines. J Sainsbury Plc came third with 59, followed by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s Asda on 56 and Waitrose Ltd. with 18. The top three gold-medal-winning nations were France, with 75, Australia, 65, and Portugal, 35. Two English wines received gold awards.

A total of 326 wines won gold. There were 1,445 silvers and 2,255 bronzes, the organizers said in an e-mailed release. The results were announced at the London International Wine Fair 2010, which opened today at ExCel.

“The IWC is the world’s most scrupulously judged wine competition,” Tim Atkin, co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge, said in the release. “The competition recognizes excellence and aims to help consumers identify some of the world’s best wines.”
