Rand Paul Win in Kentucky Senate Race Boosts Tea Party
Tea Party-backed candidate Rand Paul defeated Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson for the state’s Republican U.S. Senate nomination, according to the Associated Press.
Paul, the son of Representative Ron Paul of Texas, will oppose the Democratic nominee in November to replace retiring Republican Senator Jim Bunning.
Attorney General Jack Conway was leading Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo in the Democratic race with about 45 percent of the vote counted, according to the AP.
Paul, 47, told the FOX Business Network tonight that Republicans in his state would unite following the primary.
“We have a big unity rally planned on Saturday,” he said before his victory was declared. “I think we’ll get beyond this very quickly.”
Discussing the mood among voters, Paul said, “It’s an anti- big government message going on.”
