Carragher, King Named in Provisional England World Cup Squad; Zamora Out

Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher and Tottenham’s Ledley King were recalled by England in a 30-man provisional squad for soccer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Neither defender has played for England under manager Fabio Capello, though King was named to the squad last year before being released because of long-standing knee problems.

“We were monitoring him for a long time,” Capello told a news conference today at London’s Wembley Stadium. “The reason I selected him is that he’s good, a really good defender.”

Carragher retired from international competition three years ago and returns because of injury doubts in the defense. He wasn’t given any guarantees of being in the final squad for South Africa. The 23-man roster is announced June 1.

“He is one of the 30 players,” Capello said. “During the training camp I will evaluate the performance of each player, after that I will decide.”

Manchester City’s Gareth Barry was included along with Chelsea’s Joe Cole, Sunderland’s Darren Bent and Scott Parker of West Ham. Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and City’s Adam Johnson, who haven’t played for England, were also named.

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who missed most of the season with injury, and Fulham striker Bobby Zamora, who’s been bothered by an Achilles problem, were among those left out.

Hargreaves Conversation

Capello said he spoke to Hargreaves and the midfielder just wasn’t fit enough. He also said the omission of Zamora was the last one he made on the squad.

“I spoke to him and it was up to him because he can’t train every day,” Capello said. “He plays always with injections and probably he needs an operation.”

The England squad will travel to Austria in six days to begin training for the June 11 to July 11 tournament. It plays exhibitions against Mexico in London on May 24 and against Japan in Austria on May 30.

England opens its World Cup program against the U.S. on June 12 before taking on Algeria and Slovenia.
