Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand faces a three-week battle to prove his fitness for a place in England’s soccer World Cup squad, the News of the World reported.
Ferdinand, who’s been plagued by back and groin problems this season, may lose his place even though he’s the national captain, the newspaper said.
England coach Fabio Capello will name Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher as back-up in the provisional squad of 30, and also in the final 23, the News of the World added.
The World Cup in South Africa starts June 11.
