Disney's `Iron Man 2' Is Top Weekend Movie With $133.6 Million in Sales

“Iron Man 2,” a sequel based on the Marvel superhero comics, opened as the top movie in U.S. and Canadian theaters, kicking off the summer film season with $133.6 million for Walt Disney Co. and distributor Paramount Pictures.

The film posted the fifth-highest opening weekend gross ever, Hollywood.com Box-Office said today in an e-mailed statement.

The movie marks what is likely to be a record summer box- office season for Hollywood, Hollywood.com said. The original “Iron Man,” released in 2008, generated total worldwide ticket sales of $585 million, according to researcher Box Office Mojo.

“It delivered on what it promised,” said Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst at Los Angeles-based Exhibitor Relations Co. “The original film set the bar so high, but this was on target with all expectations in what it offered.”

In the sequel, Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony Stark, an industrialist who dons a jet-powered, armored suit to fight villains.

The movie had $10.2 million in sales at Imax Corp. theaters, a record for the company.

Time Warner Inc.’s “The Dark Knight” holds the record for the highest grossing film with $158.4 million in its opening weekend in July 2008. It went on to earn $533.3 million at the domestic box office, Hollywood.com said.

‘Nightmare on Elm Street’

Higher ticket prices and demand for 3-D movies will likely push box-office sales beyond last summer’s record $4.25 billion, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box-office tracking unit. Screenings in 3-D have accounted for $851 million, or 25 percent, of all box-office revenue this year, according to Hollywood.com. Theaters typically charge about $3 more per ticket for a 3-D movie.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” dropped to second place with $9.2 million for Time Warner Inc.’s New Line studio. The film, which features Jackie Earle Haley as serial-killer Freddy Krueger, has taken in $48.5 million in two weeks.

“How to Train Your Dragon,” from DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., dropped to third place from second with sales of $6.8 million. The film has made $201 million in six weeks of release.

“Date Night,” a comedy starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell, fell to fourth place from third, taking in $5.3 million for News Corp.

‘Robin Hood’

“The Back-Up Plan,” from CBS Corp.’s film division, dropped to fifth place from fourth with sales of $4.3 million. The romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, has made $29.4 million in three weeks.

“Robin Hood” will debut next weekend and likely won’t take the No. 1 spot from “Iron Man 2,” Bock said.

“It will be tough to beat ‘Iron Man,’” he said. “Only ‘Shrek Forever After’ and ‘Toy Story 3’ may have a chance. Those are probably the top three movies of the summer.”

Sales for the top 12 films rose 21.9 percent to $173.9 million from $142.8 million a year earlier, Hollywood.com said. Year-to-date receipts total $3.66 billion, up 6.5 percent from $3.43 billion. Attendance has fallen 0.08 percent this year.

The following table has figures provided by studios to Los Angeles-based Hollywood.com. The amounts are based on actual ticket sales for May 9 and May 10 and estimates for today.
