Blackhawks, Bruins 1 Game From Reaching Conference Finals in NHL Playoffs

Jonathan Toews scored three goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 7-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks in their National Hockey League Western Conference semifinal series.

The Blackhawks moved within one game of advancing to the conference finals with their 3-1 lead in the series. Chicago hosts Vancouver tomorrow in Game 5.

Brent Seabrook scored the first goal 18 seconds into the first period for Chicago. Kyle Wellwood countered to tie the game at 1-1. Toews and Daniel Sedin exchanged power-play goals to end the period 2-2 at General Motors Place in Vancouver.

In the second period, Toews added two power-play goals and Patrick Sharp had one to give Chicago a 5-2 lead before Alexander Edler pulled the Canucks within 5-3.

Tomas Kopecky and Dave Bolland ended the scoring for the Blackhawks in the third period, while Henrik Sedin scored a goal for Vancouver.

At Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Simon Gagne scored a goal in overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Flyers avoided elimination from the playoffs by defeating the Bruins, who have a 3-1 lead in the best-of- seven series.

Boston’s Mark Recchi scored the first goal for the Bruins, and then scored with less than a minute left in the game to tie the game at 4-4 at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

Goals by Danny Briere, Chris Pronger and Claude Giroux gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead in the second period before Michael Ryder and Milan Lucic tied the game at 3-3. Ville Leino put the Flyers ahead with just over five minutes left in the game before Recchi forced the overtime.

The teams meet for Game 5 in Boston on May 10.
