Rachel Alexandra Upset by Unrivaled Belle in Pre-Kentucky Derby Stakes

Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, finished second behind Unrivaled Belle in the $400,000 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, her second straight loss.

Unrivaled Belle completed the 1 1/16-mile race in 1 minute, 42.97 seconds, winning by a head in a stretch duel with Rachel Alexandra, a 4-year-old filly who started as the 1-5 favorite. Morena finished third in the race on the card a day before the track hosts the 136th Kentucky Derby.

If Rachel Alexandra had won, it might have renewed interest for her to race against the 6-year-old Zenyatta, who has won 16 straight races.

The two were set to face one another at the Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, earlier this year, but Rachel Alexandra’s owner, Jess Jackson, pulled her from the race after she lost in New Orleans.

Rachel Alexandra went undefeated in 2009 with wins in the Kentucky Oaks and Preakness, Mother Goose, Haskell and Woodward stakes. She won the Oaks by 20 1/4 lengths at Churchill Downs one year ago today
