Penguins, Sharks Win to Advance to Round Two of NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

The defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins eliminated the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League playoffs with a 4-3 overtime win, while the San Jose Sharks ousted the Colorado Avalanche.

Pascal Dupuis scored in overtime for the Penguins, who were down by as much as three goals during Game 6 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario. The win gave Pittsburgh a 4-2 advantage in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Matt Cullens, Chris Neil and Daniel Alfredsson put the Senators ahead 3-0 midway through the second period.

The Penguins countered with two goals by Matt Cooke and Bill Guerin to force the game into overtime.

In Game 6 at Pepsi Center in Denver, Joe Pavelski scored the go-ahead goal, his second of the game, midway through the third period as the Sharks earned a 5-2 victory and 4-2 series win over the Avalanche.

Pavelski gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead in the first period; Marek Svatos scored in the second to tie the game for the Avalanche.

Brandon Yip gave Colorado a 2-1 lead at 4:51 of the third period. The Sharks came back with four back-to-back goals by Dan Boyle, Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi and Douglas Murray.

At the United Center in Chicago, Marian Hossa scored in overtime after a five-minute penalty to put the Chicago Blackhawks within a game of round two with a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators.

Patrick Kane scored a goal at 19:46 of the third period to tie the game for the Blackhawks at 4-4 after the Predator’s Martin Erat had back-to-back goals to give Nashville a 4-3 lead.

Chicago, with a 3-2 advantage in the series, can eliminate the Predators with a win April 26 in the Western Conference quarterfinals in Nashville.
