Flyers, Penguins, Predators Take Lead in NHL First-Round Playoff Series

Jeff Carter scored two goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils in their National Hockey League Eastern Conference first- round playoff series.

Carter and Danny Briere each scored in the second period after Ilya Kovalchuk got a power-play goal for the Devils in the first period. Carter and Daniel Carcillo added goals in the third period last night at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven-game series.

Eight second-period goals were scored at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, as the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators 7-4 to take a 3-1 series advantage.

The Detroit Red Wings also won, 3-0 against the Phoenix Coyotes, to tie their series at two games each. The Nashville Predators took a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference series with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

At the Pepsi Center in Denver, Joe Pavelski scored the winning goal in overtime as the San Jose Sharks tied their series with the Colorado Avalanche at two games apiece with a 2- 1 victory.
