RRI Energy Idles Natural-Gas Mandalay Unit 1 in California

RRI Energy Inc., a Houston-based electricity producer, idled a southern California power plant unit.

The company’s Mandalay Generating Station’s 215-megawatt Unit 1 was offline in a planned shutdown as of 3:15 p.m. local time today, the California Independent System Operator said in a report.

The unit was operating at full capacity at the same time yesterday, a previous report showed.

RRI’s power station, which burns natural gas, is located in Oxnard, California. It has three generating units with a total capacity of 560 megawatts, according to the company’s Web site.

One megawatt can power about 800 typical U.S. homes.
