Marina Adshade: The Marriage Penalty

I have to say, with some regret, that the biggest financial mistake I have made was not getting married. Evidence and theory suggest that people who marry accumulate more wealth over their lifetime than do people who, like me, remain single. Two cannot, perhaps, live cheaper than one, but they can pay off the mortgage faster.

Marina Adshade, an economist and teacher at the University of British Columbia, is the author of “Dollars and Sex: How Economics Influences Sex and Love.” An interview with her is here.
