This gated community has grown from four homes in 1989 to about 400 households, according to Town Manager Deb Branwell. The 1.9-square-mile town is on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and intercoastal Indian River. Orchid features an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Golf Course at the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, which also has an 8,881-square-foot tennis, fitness center and spa. The island is certified as an Audubon cooperative sanctuary, and golfers may spot an otter, bald eagle, white pelicans or roseate spoonbills, according to the Club's website. The percentage of residents age 65 or older is the highest on our list -- 58 percent.
