Generous employers have a choice of many perks for workers who have or want children, such as adoption benefits, fertility treatment coverage, and child-care subsidies. With many benefits aimed at workers with families, "employees who have other needs are starting to speak up more," says Evren Esen, manager of the Society for Human Resource Management's survey research center. That's leading to the addition of perks that help employees care for pets. According to the society's 2010 survey, 4 percent of employers offer pet health insurance and 1 percent cover pet care when employees are traveling on business. (Two percent pay for child care while employees travel.) About 6 percent of employers let employees bring pets to work.
