The Fidelity Select Biotechnology Portfolio (FBIOX) spreads $2.7 billion in assets over 157 biotechnology stocks. A top holding is Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD), the California-based biopharmaceutical company that saw shares rise 83 percent in the first 11 months of 2012 on government approvals of HIV treatments.

Universe and criteria: 1,200 open-ended, U.S.-based equity mutual funds with assets of $500 million or more.
