Paul Newman

The Academy gave Paul Newman an honorary award in 1986 and a humanitarian award in 1994. What it rarely did was let him turn an Oscar nomination into a win. Nominated nine times for roles in such films as 1958's "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and 1967's "Cool Hand Luke" (left), Newman lost eight times and won only for his role in "The Color of Money" in 1987.
