A cyber attack on South Carolina’s Department of Revenue last year compromised thousands of taxpayers’ Social Security numbers and bank account information. Some taxpayers report that others have filed tax returns in their names. While several states fight with Amazon over sales taxes they believe the retailer owes them, South Carolina celebrated the 1,000 or so jobs the Internet retailer brought to its residents. In 2011, South Carolina brokered a deal in which the company agreed to put a distribution center in the state in exchange for not being required to collect sales tax.
