No. 8 Alaska

Unemployment rate: 6.18%
Benefit as a percentage of income: 27.45%
Wealth disparity ratio: 1.00

The percentage of those unemployed is lower here than in many states, but unemployment insurance, which replaces only 27.4 percent of lost income, is among the lowest in the nation, along with Washington, D.C., and Florida. Things are worse for women since the main job opportunities are in male-dominated industries such as oil and gas exploration and mining. Adding to that, an American Express study ranks Alaska last in the U.S. in the growth of businesses owned by women. From 2007 to 2012, only 11 percent of startups were founded by women, compared with 50 percent nationwide.
