Methodology

Both the Most Divorced States ranking, which includes the rates of married and separated residents, and the Most Never-Married Residents ranking are based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey, 2012. The Greatest Decrease in Marriages ranking data, which included marriages per 1,000 residents from 2001 to 2011, comes from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. The CDC did not have data for Oklahoma prior to 2004 and for Louisiana in 2006. Nevada and Hawaii were excluded due to unusually high marriage rates, presumably because of their popularity for “destination” weddings.
