Kansas Governor Sam Brownback is one of several governors working to abolish or limit income taxes in their respective states. Kansas is one of 14 states that tax Social Security income; an exemption applies to Social Security income received by taxpayers with annual federal adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less. In July 2010, the state's sales tax rose from 5.3 percent to 6.3 percent, a rate expected to decline to 5.7 percent in July of this year.
