European Crises

When: Ongoing
What: Europe's debt crisis dragged on. Riots erupted in Athens; rating agencies downgraded the sovereign debt of Greece and Portugal; and more bailouts were required. On Oct. 26, European leaders persuaded bondholders to take a 50 percent loss on Greek debt and agreed to increase the rescue fund. The resulting calm was short-lived as the Greek government quickly went into crisis and the country's support for the bailout was in question.
