Davis, California

School: University of California, Davis
Students: 32,653
Median home value: $422,100

UC Davis got the top ranking in the Sierra Club's list of "America's Coolest Schools," in part for sustainability efforts that include a new zero-net-energy residential community. Enrollment is up 6.5 percent over the past five years; enrollment for the 2012-2013 year is projected to be 32,965. Davis is a true college town, with more students than long-term residents. It would take nine years and nine months before buying and living in a home here became more financially advantageous than renting it.
