Best Beach for History

About 156,000 Allied troops landed on Normandy's beaches on D-Day, June 6, 1944, beginning the successful invasion of France that would speed the fall of Nazi Germany a year later. More than 4,400 Allied troops are believed to have been killed on the first day, mostly on the beach. The D-Day beaches are now a popular tourist attraction, with many German-built shore defenses still in place.
