Manufacturing Mayhem

When: Aug. 18
What: Volatility in the U.S. and international financial markets hurt business activity in the Philadelphia region. Orders fell and factories shed workers. In the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's August survey of manufacturers, the general economic index fell to -30.7, the lowest level since March 2009. The news sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging 419 points over worries that the economy was heading back into recession.
