Investor Paralysis

"People are just freezing," says Mark Rylance, an adviser at RS Crum in Newport Beach, Calif. Clients are coming to him with large amounts of cash--from a real estate transaction or selling businesses--and not wanting to do anything with the money. They're "absolutely scared to death of the market," fearing that both stocks and bonds are overvalued. Rylance tries to overcome these jitters by telling them of the importance of generating income on assets and by investing carefully and slowly, deploying not more than a quarter of the portfolio each month.
