Of 338 ETFs that met Bloomberg Rankings' criteria, only a third provided a positive yearly return to investors through Dec. 2. The average ETF lost 6 percent in a period when the S&P 500 had a total return of 0.9 percent.

The very worst-performing ETFs, which follow, were often concentrated in a narrow industry that had an especially tough 2011. Or they specialized in emerging market countries, where trading has been especially volatile this year.
