No. 3: Boston

Breakeven horizon: 3.9 years

Zillow Rent Index:  11.3%

Homes sold at a loss: 26.73%

Boston, home to the nation's first subway (1897) and first Zip Code (01001), is also home to a tremendous number of renters, given its status as a college town. As of last December, the Zillow Rental Index and Home Value Index for Boston both jumped more than 11 percent year over year. The median home value stands at $370,800, and the median rent at $2,300. The city's mix of history, nightlife and education (some 22 colleges) earned it the No. 4 spot on Bloomberg Businessweek’s 2012 list of America’s 50 Best Cities.
