Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes

White bread, made from refined flour and often fortified with vitamins, was once associated with modern progress. Wonder Bread, created in 1921, led the way. In the 1930s, it was the first bread brand to be sold pre-sliced. Hostess cakes were distributed alongside the bread and have come with a variety of evocative names: Suzy Q's, Ho Ho's, Ding Dongs, Zingers and, of course, the Twinkie, first sold in 1930. More recently, Hostess Brands has fallen on hard times, spending five of the last eight years in bankruptcy.
